Paper Chain Template – Blank

This blank paper chain template is a great guide to help younger children cut paper strips to make a paper chain.

Print on any colored paper you like (or white looks good too!). Children could also color, draw or create a pattern on the strips using markers or stamps etc.

Cut off the edges, then the children can cut down the lines to make their paper chain strips with independence. Bend the strips into a circle shape then use tape to keep the circle together. Thread the next strip through the previous circle to link it together and repeat until you have a chain.

Making paper chains is so much fun! It can be a fantastic teamwork activity, it’s great for developing critical thinking skills and fine motor skills, not to mention the math concepts you can teach through this activity!

Ideas for Use:

* Compare and order the length of chains.

* Challenge the kids to make a chain of a certain length.

* Measure chains with informal units or formal units using a measuring tape.

* Patterns: print onto different colored paper so that children can make a repeating color pattern with the chain.

* Fun craft/design activity.

* Count-down chain. When counting down days or hours until a special event, make a chain containing the number of links that corresponds to the number of days or hours until the event. Children take off one link each day/hour to give a visual representation of how many days/hours remaining.

* Tens chain. Print in several different colors and children make a chain of ten links. Join the chains together to count in tens. The different colors help the children see the groups of ten.

One page makes a chain of approximately 2 feet or 61cm.
