These River Stones Ten Frame Mats are great for learning one-to-one correspondence when counting, composition of numbers, number combinations to 10, addition and subtraction with concrete materials, number sequencing and more!

Uses:

* Counting: children practise counting loose parts/objects by placing one in each box as they count to ten. You might choose to use the mat with the numbers printed on it to help children learn the visual representation of the numbers as they count.

* Understanding the correspondence between the number spoken and the amount it represents: an option for this is to use the mat with the numbers printed on it and have the children put small objects (such as beads or small pebbles) into each box to show that amount ie. one bead in the “1” box, 2 beads in the “2” box, 3 beads in the “3” box etc. (Note: WunderSparks activity ideas are designed for children over the age of 3, who are no longer putting small objects in mouths.)

* Composition of numbers: choose a focus number and have the children put that number of objects into the frame. Provide more than one type of loose parts/counters and ask the children to make the focus number using 2 types of loose parts/counters (eg. dinosaurs and rocks). Note that the number (say it’s 7) can be made with 3 dinosaurs and 4 rocks. Ask the children to make 7 a different way, they might make 5 and 2, 1 and 6. You can also put a focus number of objects into the frame and notice how many more or less to make 5 or 10. The frame is a fantastic visual tool for this.

* Combinations to 10: pick a focus number within 10 (using WunderSparks number cards face down can be a fun way to select a number). Make the number by placing that many objects within the frame. Ask students how many more is needed to get to 10. Ask them to select a different type of counter to fill the frame up to 10 (eg. If the focus number was 6, they will need to count out 4 more to make 10.) Make a list of the different number combinations they can discover that make 10.

* Addition and subtraction: Ten Frames are a fantastic visual tool for addition and subtraction with concrete materials (objects). It helps children visually see and track what is happening when you add and subtract. WunderSparks addition and subtraction cards make it easy for the children to practise addition and subtraction skills with the ten frames.

* Addition or subtraction with cards: Print a set of WunderSparks addition or subtraction cards and place them in a pile or face down on a surface. Children flip a card, read the addition or subtraction equation and use the frame and concrete materials to solve it. The cards mean teachers or parents are not having to keep coming up with equations, they are there ready for the children to use independently.

* Number sequencing: You may like to use the frame as a guide for children as they learn to sequence numbers. WunderSparks number cards work really well for this. You can print the number cards to 10 and the children practise placing the cards in the frame in the correct sequence.

* Writing numbers: The ten frame can also be used for practising writing numbers. They can write the numbers to 10 in the frame. Laminating the paper or placing it in a dry erase pouch will allow you to use the frame over and over with dry erase markers.
