* Coded with heart symbols and flash symbols that identify the flash words (contain regular sounds that are decodable with single letter phonics knowledge), permanent heart words (those that contain a permanently irregular sound) and temporary heart words (those that contain digraphs and other phonics rules that are decodable once learnt, but irregular until then).
* Color coded text.
* Includes 3 information pages to explain: what High Frequency Words, Heart Words and Flash Words are and why they are helpful in learning to read; how the heart words are coded to show the irregular part of the word; ideas for ways to use the cards (games and activities).
* Includes a 3 page word list as an overview of the words.
Ideas for Use:
* Hide cards around the room for a high frequency words hunt (students read the words as they find them).
* Hide in a sensory bin (students read the words as they find them).
* Knock down/target games. Attach the high frequency words cards to objects that can be knocked down, eg. Stacking cups, ten pin bowling pins, magnetic tiles. Children use items eg. a small bean bag or a soft ball to knock them down. They read the ones they knocked down and collect them. If you have the appropriate space and if it’s safe, you could also use items such as a water gun (outdoors) or remote control car to knock down the objects.
* Tossing into containers. Attach cards onto a series of plastic bowls/buckets or in the holes on a muffin baking tray. Children then toss small objects (eg. Ping pong balls, small beanbags, large pom poms etc) into the containers. If they get it in they read the word on that container and collect it.
* Card games such as “Memory”, “Snap” or “Go Fish”. (Print duplicates of the words you are focusing on)
* Sticky Hand Game. Lay the cards either face up or face down (whatever you prefer) and the children try to slap the cards with the sticky hand and retrieve them. They read and keep the words they retrieve with the sticky hand.
* Path games. Make a path in the style of a track or stepping stones. You could just place the cards on the floor in a line with enough space to step between them, or you could make a more elaborate path. Ideas for making the track include using chalk, natural materials if outdoors, skipping ropes, ribbon, flat sturdy cushions, non slip mats etc. (always consider safety, risk and what is right for the children in your setting). Place word cards along the path for children to read as they move along the path in order to get to the end. Alternatively, you could make a “small world” path to move a toy along, reading the words as they go. Magnetic tiles work really well for this.
