Multiplication Mats – Ponds

These “Pond” Multiplication Mats are fantastic for helping children develop an understanding of the concept of multiplication. Present these mats with a collection of manipulatives (small objects) for the children to use to make equal groups.

Features:

* Contains mats for 2 groups up to 10 groups.

* Laminate for longevity and reuse over and over with dry erase markers.

Ideas for Use:

* Little yellow ducks or plastic frogs go really well with the pond as manipulatives.

* When they are ready, use our multiplication cards to give students an equation to make on the mat. This helps bridge the understanding between what they are doing with making groups and the written algorithm.

* Make up a little story with the children about what they are doing eg. The ducks are playing a game and they have to make equal groups in the ponds to play. You may like to ask them questions such as “How many ponds are there?”, “How many ducks are in each group?”, “Do they all have the same amount?” “How many ducks are there altogether?”.

Tip! While the children are developing an understanding of what they are doing, use words like “groups of” rather than “times” or “multiplied by”, as they make it easier for them to understand the concept.
